After graduating from Waynesboro Area Senior High school in 1990, Wayne Myers attended Shippensburg University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, with a minor in psychology. Following a mission trip to Brazil, Wayne decided to pursue a career as a pharmacist and attended the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus where he earned his Pharm. D.
Summit Health Services began planning for the Summit Health Center at Norland Avenue in Chambersburg in the late 1990s. At the ripe old age of 28, Wayne was presented the opportunity to open a pharmacy in the Summit Health Center. Wayne had envisioned owning and operating a modern cutting edge pharmacy that could prioritize innovations in pharmacy, such as health maintenance via supplements, patient medicine counseling, and compounding. He saw this opportunity as his chance to make it happen.
In the same year that they celebrated their wedding, Wayne and his wife, Wendy, spearheaded the effort to arrange the financing, design the layout of the 3,380 square foot store, and obtain the necessary permits to open the pharmacy. Norland Avenue Pharmacy LLC opened in the Summit Health Center in February of 2001 with four employees.
From the beginning, Wayne and Wendy aimed to glorify God through the business. During the first year the pharmacy grew steadily ending the year averaging around 100 prescriptions per day. Norland Avenue experienced quite a surge in traffic and competition when the Walker Road exit to Interstate 81 opened in 2007. Both Target and Giant opened that year each with their own pharmacy. Internally, as the pharmacy settled into the prescription business, Wayne started focusing on compounding and supplements. Pharmacy staff completed training with the Professional Compounding Centers of America and began offering customized medications that weren’t available anywhere else in area. Meanwhile, Wayne hired a full-time supplement specialist, Tracie Roles, to help answer customers’ questions about vitamins and supplements.
In 2008 the pharmacy began offering free monthly seminars to educate and inform the public about specific health issues including Hormone Replacement Therapy, Cholesterol, Adrenal Fatigue, and Digestion. The Norland Rewards program was introduced in February of 2009 and by April of 2011 more than 7,000 members had joined.
Always striving to care for the customers, Wayne has tried different offerings throughout the years; but the focus continues to be on glorifying God and getting and keeping people healthy through a blend of traditional and non-traditional treatment methods.
Today the pharmacy has three full-time pharmacists and about 30 employees.
